Reflection through the Making Media course

Introduction

Semester C is come to an end, therefore, self-evaluation is needed to see how we had performed, then we can improve our weaknesses and promote our strengths. I realize that through the Making Media course, I had gained many experiences in both academic field and soft skill area. Therefore, in this reflection paper, I will divide in two parts, one will reflect the academic field and other reflect the soft skill area.

What I had learned in academic field

In assignment 1, I had learned to develop a script in podcast that concise but still fully delivered the message. Then in the second assigment, I learned a new skill-photograph, I learned some basic techniques in using a professional camera, for example, adjust the aperture or using rule of third for a balancing photo. Then in the final assignment, I get to know how to use Wix to create a portfolio website with all the transition and design that make the website professional. At the end, I realize my strengths and weaknesses in the academic field. From podcast’s script to website’s blog posts, I only need to spend enough time to done it and still keeping the word limit, so writing is my strengths and that is a result from planning beforehand. However, I also have some limitation, my aesthetic appeal is not good enough to create a well-designed website or magazine, and I am not mastered editing skill as well. Therefore, in order to improve my weakness, I need to read more magazine to get the inspiration like “Vogue” or “Communication Arts” and also using “Pinterest”, then, during the sem-break I will learn more about editing through Adobe on YouTube.

Soft skills that I had learned

I learned to negotiate with teammates to choose the best option for our work, because in a big group, it is difficult to agree with all, we can only choose the suitable one. Futhermore, problem solving is an important skill that I had learned. During assignment 2, the studio we need to book is full, then, immediately we created plan B which is using the apartment’s yard of my teammate since it is somehow related to our theme. Problem solving is necessary to guarantee the quality of work and to meet the deadline. To evaluate my strengths in soft skills, I would say that it is about giving objective view when dicuss in team. Whenever choosing an idea, I would evaluated if everyone agree with it, there was absolutely no choice that only based on my feeling. Nevertheless, since I tried to make sure everyone is agree, I did not dare to fight for my idea once there is a person did not agree with it, and this is my weakness, because sometimes the idea actually work but I did not developed it and my teammates did not understood it well. Therefore, in the future, to improve this issue, I need to strongly protect my idea if I feel it could really help the group’s work. Keeping peace in group and protecting my idea are both significant.

How could it help in further

In media industry we will need to work in team for most of the time, since media project need lots of positions. Therefore, with the skill of negotiation we can do teamwork effectively and produce high quality work. Moreover, making media depend on different technology equipments, therefore, sometimes we cannot control their condition, and problem solving skill is always need to adress the incident immidiately. With all the academic skill, I could strongly trying any position in media industry as the starter.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the course had provided me many useful skills both in academic field and soft skills which can benefit me in the future. In further, with all the foundation knowledge, I will enhance them through practice and also by self-learning during my free time. Besides, I also having fun while taking the course, and many thanks to Dr Rimi who was very considerate to guide me through every assignment and motivated our team to do the best.
